In Memoriam: Carla Cushman

''Remembering Carla''

We lost our dear Carla-Mom on October 22, 2015. She went peacefully in her sleep. There was no funeral, she hated them. The family will take her ashes from Ohio home to California in the Spring, where we'll gather with her friends for a Celebration of Life.

With such an abrupt ending to her life, and knowing so many loved her and will miss her spirit and intelligence and smile, it seemed only fitting to commemorate her passing here on her Cushman Family history genealogy website.

Carla K. Cushman, 84, of Lima, passed away at 5:56 AM on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at her residence. 

She was born on October 7, 1931 in Oakland, CA to Charles and Margeurite (McCleod) Cushman, who both preceded her in death. She was formerly married to Richard Dow, who preceded her in death. 

Carla proudly served her country as a veteran of the Marine Corps during Korea. She had earned her Bachelor's degree in journalism and was a writer in PR and advertising for several companies. She had a passion for the theatre, writing, blogging and genealogy. She was famous for her "Carla Cards". 

Surviving are her daughter Marianne (Jeff Klingler) Dow of Harrod OH; her two sons Mason (Deb) Dow of Santa Ana, CA and Mitchell Dow of Long Beach, CA; her sister Paula Tuttle of Utica, NY; her granddaughter Ana (Mike) Everage-Mercer. 

There will be no services or visitation.

Of course this barely scratches the surface of who Carla was, what she did, and what she meant to her loved ones, extended family, and her many many life-long friends.

Below are a few vintage photos of Carla. I will be adding more in the future, along with some memoir notes that I found in Carla's journals. So this is only the first part of ''Remembering Carla''.

When Robert was 26, he married Mercy WASHBURN, ID133, daughter of John WASHBURN, ID7653 & Lydia BILLINGTON, ID7654, on 17 Apr 1725 (date published for marriage). Mercy was born 21 Apr 1702 in Plymouth. She died in Kingston on 3 May 1796; she was 94.

On 23 May 1727 when Hannah was 21, she married Moses WASHBURN, 1C8R, ID22320, son of James WASHBURN, ID20603 (15 May 1672-11 Jun 1749) & Mary BOWDEN, ID22315 (abt 1670-18 Dec 1747), in Kingston, Plymouth Co MA. Moses was born 9 Sep 1702 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co MA. He died aft 14 Jan 1747; he was 44.

The will of Robert Cushman Sr. of Kingston, dated 9 Feb 1746/47, left a bequest to his daughter Hannah Washburn. 

In a deed ack. 13 Apr 1739, Moses Washburn and wife Hannah sold to Samuel Keith 60 acres of land in Bridgewater.

Thomas first married Alice HAYWARD, ID520, daughter of Thomas HAYWARD, ID7655 & Bethiah BRETT, ID7656. Alice was born 7 Apr 1707 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co MA. She died in Oct 1803; she was 96.

From HWC’s Cushman Gen: Mary, Bartholomew, and the twins d. with throat ail or distemper (prob. “croup”) within eight hours, so that the family was left childless, 30 Dec 1747. [Footnote: “In Thomas Cushman’s family, out of six persons four died in eight hours and were interred in the same grave. The disease was a violent, putrid fever with sore throat, not attended with eruption.” —Mass. Hist. Coll., 2d series, v. 3.]

From Francis Cooke of the MF...5 Gens: (Thomas Cushman was) a descendant of Pilgrims Isaac Allerton and John Howland.

The will of Thomas Cushman of Kingston, yeoman, dated 16 Feb 1768, proved 1 Aug 1768, names sons Amaziah, Elisha, James and John; daughters Desire Cushman and Sarah Cushman; and brother John Faunce. John Faunce was appointed guardan to daughter Desire Cushman, sons James and John Cushman. Mr. John Gray was named guardian to daughter Sarah Cushman, sons Amaziah and Elisha Cushman. Brother John Faunce and Mr. John Gray were named executors. The inventory, totaling £554-12-04, was swon to on 20 Aug 1768 by the executors. In a division of woodland, allowed 5 Apr 1779, equal shares were allotted sons Amaziah, Elisha, James and John. Sources: References top of p. 405, above-cited book.

American House of Delano gives Mary’s d.o.b. as 4 Apr 1706, and her parents as Josiah Soule and Lydia Delano. Her family is listed as follows: Lydia Delano, d. Dux 24 Nov 1763, m. Dux 25 May 1704 Josiah Soule, son of John & Esther (Delano?) Soule, b. do. 1682 d. 25 Jun 1764. Their children: (1) Jonathan b. 23 Jun 1705, d. 4 Apr 1776. (2) Mary, b. 4 Apr 1706, m. Joshua Cushman of Lebanon CT 2 Jan 1733 formerly of Dux. (3) Abisha b. 25 Nov 1708, m. 14 May 1741 Abigail dau. of Philip and Elizabeth (Dingley) Delano. (4) Micha, b. 12 Apr 1711, m. 30 May 1740 Mercy Southworth. (5) Nathaniel, b. 4 Nov 1714, m. 27 Apr 1775 Abigail Tolman of Scituate MA. This information fits Mary Soule ID#24854. But the George Soule book is most likely correct.

George Soule of the MF...4 Gens gives Mary’s parents as Joseph Soule and Mary Peterson.

Cushman Genealogy and General History by Alvah W. Burt (hereafter called Cushman Gen/Hist): Gives Mary’s d.o.b. as 6 Dec 1706, and incorrectly traces her line as Josiah 3d gen, John 2d gen, George 1st gen.

In 1736 when Jonathan was 23, he married Susannah BENSON, 5G Grandmother, ID151, daughter of John BENSON, ID152 (-30 May 1770) & Elizabeth WASHBURN, ID153 (12 Oct 1684-9 Mar 1765). Susannah was born probably in Bridgewater.

On 17 Jun 1764 when Thomas was 59, he second married Susanna JOHNSON, 31039, in New Providence, Essex Co NJ.

From Cushman Gen/Hist: He removed from Lebanon CT to Elizabeth NJ prior to 19 Jun 1759 when, as Thomas Cushman, Yeoman, he was administrator of the estate of his son Oliver.

In the early days of New Jersey there were no Public Health Records kept, nor church records of marriages, births, deaths and baptisms as are now kept today. There has been found in the records in one of the old minute books of the First Presbyterian Church of New Providence, fragmentary mention of the Frazee family which is recorded herein under the Isaac Cushman descent. The earliest records made and in existence, at this time, in either Essex County or in Union County NJ, are dated 1848. In Union County they supplement by saying, “to 1848 but, of course, we do not have every one.”

In Preston County WV the court house burned in 1869 and, therefore, they have no records prior to that date.

The family moved from Lebanon CT, consisting of 7 children (2 sons, 5 daus.). Recorded in the Archives of the town clerk of Lebanon, New London Co CT. The family, therefore, moved down to Essex Dounty NJ after 1743, as the last child was b. in New Providence, Essex Co NJ in 1752.

Oliver Cushman was a soldier and his name is found in Joseph Camp’s account book in 1753, pp. 28-29.

On 9 Mar 1727/28 when Zibiah was 19, she married Josiah COOKE, 7G Uncle, ID22596, son of Jacob COOKE, ID16614 (26 Mar 1653-24 Apr 1747) & Lydia MILLER, ID16615 (18 May 1661-1 Mar 1727), in Tolland, Tolland Co CT. Josiah was born 14 May 1699 in Kingston, Plymouth Co MA. He died in Tolland, Tolland Co CT bef 18 Sep 1752; he was 53. Admin. bond. Occupation: yeoman.

From Francis Cooke of the MF...4 Gens: On 12 Oct 1728 Jacob Cooke of Kingston gave part of his homestead to son Josiah Cooke of Tolland CT. On 14 Oct 1728 Josiah Cooke of Tolland in county of Hartford in the Colony of Connecticut, yeoman, sold land in Kingston to John Cooke Jr. of Kingston, husbandman. The land was on the easterly side of the land of his brother William Cooke.

Administration of the estate of Josiah Cook of Tolland was granted to Jesse Cook, with the bond signed 18 Sep 1752. The distribution dated 25 Dec 1752 names daughters Sarah Harris, Lydia Cook, Submit Cook, Zibiah Cook, Ruth Cook and son Josiah Cook. Sources: References near bottom of p. 76, above-cited book.

36. Lydia CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID95. Born on 13 Dec 1687 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Lydia died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 7 Jul 1771; she was 83.

On 29 Dec 1709 when Lydia was 22, she and John WATERMAN, ID96, son of Dea. John WATERMAN, ID97 (1642-) & Ann STURTEVANT, ID7050, were married in Plympton by Rev. Isaac Cushman. From HWC’s Cushman Gen: James was b. in Plymouth and settled in that part of Fair Haven that was then Dartmouth. He built the house (still standing in 1855 when HWC published his Cushman Genealogy), about four miles north of New Bedrord, which was occupied by his son Elisha. He had 11 children.

On —— 1717/8 (date omitted), ack. 11 Mar 1717/8, John Pratt of Plympton, yeoman, sold to John Cushman of Plymouth, husbandman, 106 acres in Plympton. On 28 May 1722 John Cushman, laborer, mortgaged the land and sold off the land in pieces on 27 Feb 1721/2 and 18 Feb 1722/3. No wife signed any of the deeds, even though she was alive. No further deeds for John Cushman.

John Cushman became poor and landless and the town frequently had to help him beginning 12 Oct. 1741 and ending 9 May 1760. On 16 Nov 1747 the town paid his wife’s doctor bill and that is the last reference to her.

The will of Thomas Doty of Cape Cod in Truro, dated 9 May 1721 and probated 8 Feb 1721/2, names wife Mercy; Joseph Abbitt, the child that lives with me (under age 21); son Thomas (to maintain his grandmother Mary Churchill during her life), and executors Joseph Hatch and Christopher Stout (the latter renounced his power of executorship). Inventory was taken 16 Feb 1721/2 and included dwelling houses, a cooper’s shop and warehouse, boat, schooner and rigging, half a whale boat, and a pew in the meeting house. Another inventory taken 3 Mar 1721/2 included an old dwelling and land between Return Waite and James Rickard’s land in Plymouth, land in Plymouth below Cole’s Hill, 30 feet of waterfront with the cooper’s shop, house and land at Wellingsley (a section of Plymouth), six acres of land between Samuel Harlow and John Faunce, five tracts between Thomas Harlow and Jonathan Morey, 30 acres above Josiah Finney and near Warren’s Wells, a share of cedar swamp in the 9th lot, and a pew in the gallery in the meeting house in the South Precinct of Plymouth. In Dec 1724 Joseph Hatch, seafaringman or fisherman of Cape Cod, as executor of the estate of Thomas Doty of Cape Cod, innholder and cooper, defended against two civil suits filed in the Court of Common Pleas at Plymouth. On 4 Mar 1713, ack. 19 Oct 1713, Thomas Harlow of Plymouth sold for £2.10s. from Benjamin Warren of Plymouth, his right in a piece of meadow and swamp in Plymouth at Little Meadow. Thomas Harlow of Plymouth, seaman, sold on 15 Jan 1723/4 for £30 from Elisha Holmes of Plymouth, 30 acres of land formerly granted to “my Honored Father William Harlow deceased by the Town of Plymouth” at Monomet Ponds.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: William Harlow is named in the settlement of his father’s estate on 7 Mar 1711/12, receiving the 100-acre lot on “Fall brook in Middlebury,” Massachusetts, and in the division of his mother’s estate on 11 Jul 1720.

William Harlow and wife were dismissed to the 2nd church at Bridgewater on 24 Sep 1749. William is said to have removed to B ridgewater as early as 1742, but he may have done business there much earlier, as William Harlow of Bridgewater was granted a retail license to sell liquor in Sep 1731.

William Harlow of Bridgewater died intestate and administration was granted to his son William Harlow on 5 Mar 1749/50.

On 3 Jun 1769 Daniel Snell and Joannah, John Snow and Hanna, Nathan Perkins and Sarah, Jonathan Beal and Abigail, Daniel Washburn and Experience, all of Bridgewater; Jacob Peterson and Mary of Duxbury; Benjamin Pratt and Lydia of Middleboro; John Harlow of Middleboro, cordwainer; and Isaac Harlow of New Lebanon in New York, heirs of the estate of William Harlow late of Bridgewater, deceased, quitclaimed for £6.10s. paid by William Harlow of Middleboro, cordwainer and administrator of the estate of said William Harlow deceased, their title in 11-1/4 acres of land in Middleboro.
