26. Lt. Isaac CUSHMAN Jr., 1C8R, ID40. Born 15 Nov 1676 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA, He died there on 18 Sep 1727; he was 50.

On 18 Jan 1700 when Isaac was 23, he first married Sarah Warren GIBBS, 2C9R, ID116, daughter of Thomas GIBBS, ID117 (23 Mar 1646/47-7 Jan 1732/33) & Alice WARREN, ID6961 (2 Aug 1656-aft 4 Mar 1691/92), in Plympton, Plymouth Co MA. Sarah was born in Plymouth abt 1683, and died there on 28 Oct 1716; she was 33.

They had the following children:

iii. Rebecca, 2C7R, ID197 was born in Plympton on 14 Oct 1707. On 8 Dec 1726, when Rebecca was 19, she married Jabez NEWLAND, ID198, son of Jeremiah NEWLAND, ID32375 & Susanna HARRIS, ID32376 in Plympton. Jabez was born abt 1707. Rebecca died in child birth on 21 Aug 1727; she was not yet 20. Jabez lived a long life; he died in Plympton on 7 Apr 1787, at the age of 80.

On 10 Oct 1717 when Isaac was 40, he second married Mercy BRADFORD, 2C7R, ID118, daughter of Maj. John BRADFORD, ID119 (20 Feb 1653-8 Dec 1736) & Mercy WARREN, ID6962 (23 Sep 1653-1743), in Harwich, Barnstable Co MA. Mercy was born 20 Dec 1681 in Plymouth, Plymouth, and died in Plympton on 27 Jun 1738; she was 56.

They had the following children:

On 31 Dec 1741 when Abigail was 19, she married Gideon SAMPSON, ID8296, son of George SAMPSON Jr., ID28994 (10 Mar 1691-6 Feb 1774) & Hannah SOULE, ID28496 (18 Mar 1696-22 Sep 1776), in Plympton. Gideon was born on 15 Oct 1719 in Plympton, and died in Duxbury, Plymouth Co MA on 30 Oct 1794; he was 75.

From VR of Plympton to 1850 • Plympton Deaths, p. 470: Cushnab, Isaac Jr., Lt., h. Sarah, h. Marcy (d. Maj. John Bradford of Kingston, Sept. 4, 1727, in 51st y. His gravestone says he died Sept. 18.

From HWC’s Cushman Gen: He and both wives were members of the church at Plympton, of which his father was Pastor. He was for many years a Lieutenant in the Militia company of that town; was frequently one of the Selectmen and Assessors, and was quite a distinguished land Surveyor. He d. holding the office of Town Clerk, “which office he had held 16 years 6 months and 16 days,” says Dea. Bradford — i.e., from 1711 to 1728. He was a much respected and valuable citizen.

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: Isaac Cushman was Town Clerk of Plympton from 1711 until his death in 1727. He was Representative to the General Court in 1725 and 1726. 

The nuncupative will of Isaac Cushman Jr. late of Plimpton declared 13 Sep 1727, names wife; son Nathaniel; dau. Phebe; five daughters.

In 1728 guardians were appointed for Priscilla, Abigail, Fear and Nathaniel children of Isaac Cushman deceased.

On 27 Mar 1734 the homestead was set off to the widow for her “only son” Nathaniel Cushman and the remainder was divided between daus. Abigail Cushman, Priscilla Cushman, Fear Cushman and Phebe Spooner who “was wife of Nath’ Spooner late of Dartmouth, Bristol Co., decd.”

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: On 23 Dec 1718 Isaac Cushman Sr. of Plimton gave to his son Isaac Cushman of Plimton (with the condition that Isaac pay £100 to son Ichabod), all of his property except the share of cedar swamp in Colchester Cedar Swamp, reserving to himself and his wife Rebecca use and improvement for their lifetimes of the house and lands on the south side of Colchester Brook where he then lived and the meadow in Winnatuxet. On 3 Jan 1723, Isaac Cushman Jr. of Plimton gave to his brother Ichabod Cushman of Middleboro (with the condition that he maintain a sufficient fence) the meadow on the south side of Winetuxett River deeded to him by his father and the right to meadow formerly owned by John Howland.

The nuncupative will of Isaac Cushman Jr., late of Plimpton, declared 13 Sep 1727, mentions his beloved wife, son Nathaniel (under 21), daughter Phebe, and five (unnamed) daughters. All of the real estate went to Nathaniel reserving “my Father and my wife’s improvement.” Witnesses were John Bell, Benjamin Cushman, and Ruth Churchel. In 1728 guardians were appointed for Priscilla, Abigail, Fear, and Nathaniel, children of Isaac Cushman deceased. The homestead was set off on 27 Mar 1734 to the widow for her “only son” Nathaniel Cushman, and the remainder was divided among daughters Abigail Cushman, Priscilla Cushman, Fear Cushman, and Phebe Spooner, who “was wife of Nath. From Harlow Family...5 Gens: The will of Thomas Gibbs Sr. of Sandwich dated 23 Jun 1725 leaves £10 to the “children of my daughter Sarah.” On 9 May 1733 Phebe Spooner signed a receipt for herself and her brother Nathaniel Cushman for receipt of £7.8s. from the estate of their grandfather Thomas Gibbs. Jabez Newland apparently had no children by either of his wives, certainly no surviving children. His will dated 20 Jan 1781 names only his sister Ketinah Perce [sic], his wife Sarah, and Jabez Newland Cushman, who was a son of Isaiah and Sarah (Ring) Cushman. From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: Mercy was a descendant of Pilgrims William Bradford and Richard Warren.

On 27 May 1718 Mercy Cushman, wife of Isaac Cushman, late widow of Jonathan Freeman of Harwich received personal property from Jonathan’s estate for the support of the children she had by him.

The will of John Bradford of Kingston dated 2 Oct. 1732, names dau. Mercy, widow of Isaac Cushman Jr. of Plympton.

On 14 Apr 1741 the widow Mercy Cushman’s estate was divided among Fear Sturtevant wife of Nehemiah Sturtevant of Plympton; Phebe the wife of Barnabas Hatch of Tolland CT; Priscilla the wife of Israel Holmes of Plimpton; and Abigail Cushman. Nathaniel Cushman and Sarah, wife of John Gibbs, had quitted their rights.

She mentions Jonathan Freeman, daughter Mercy Waterman, son Bradford Freeman (under 21), son Ichabod Freeman (under 21), heirs of daughter Marcy (“she still living & no heirs then”), daughters Fear Cushman, Priscilla Cushman, and Abigail Cushman, brother Samuel Bradford of Plimpton (executor). On 14 Apr 1741 the widow Mercy Cushman’s estate was divided among Fear Sturtevant the wife of Nehemiah Sturtevant of Plympton; Phebe the wife of Barnabas Hatch of Tolland, Connecticut; Priscille the wife of Israel Holmes of Plimpton; and Abigail Cushman. From HWC’s Cushman Gen: Abigail Cushman Sampson had no children. Was a member of the church and “was an excellent school mistress.”

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: In 1728 a guardian was appointed for Abigail, daughter of Isaac Cushman, deceased, and she shared in the division of the homestead on 27 Mar 1734. On 14 Apr 1741 Abigail Cushman shared in the division of the estate of widow Mercy Cushman. The Plympton vital records state Abigail was “for many years an eminent School Mistress.”

Both Gideon and Rebecca were descendants of Pilgrim George Soule. 

Gideon Sampson’s will was dated 28 Oct 1794 and proved at Plympton, 9 Dec 1794. It names his wife Rebecca, kinswomen Hannah Perkins, Rebeckah Killey, Elizabeth Cushman and Abigail Cushman daughter of Joseph Cushman. No issue. Source: References p. 36, above-cited book.

27. Rebecca CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID41. Born on 30 Nov 1678 in Plymouth,  Rebecca died in North Yarmouth, Barnstable Co ME on 8 Jul 1756; she was 77.

On 18 Nov 1701 when Rebecca was 22, she married Dea. Jacob MITCHELL, 120, son of Jacob MITCHELL, ID6969 & Susanna POPE, ID6970, in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Jacob was born abt 1672 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co MA, and died in North Yarmouth, Barnstable Co ME on 21 Dec 1744; he was 72. Occupation: blacksmith.

They had the following children:

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: On 29 Aug 1695 Thomas Michel, weaver, Jacob Michel, blacksmith, and Mary Mitchell, spinster, all of Bridgewater, children of Jacob Mitchell late of Dartmouth, carpenter, dec. sold Seth Pope land in Dartmouth inherited from their father.

On 4 April 1728 Jacob Mitchell sold his house and land in Kingston to Benjamin Samson. Jacob and wife Rebecca acknowledged the same day.

On 18 Nov 1730 Deacon Jacob Mitchell was one of the founders of the North Yarmouth First Church.

The 31 Oct. 1746 division set off to the widow her thirds and divided the rest to dau. Rebecca, wife of Elnathan Pope of Dartmouth; son Noah Mitchell; Susanna wife of Samuel Baker of North Yarmouth; Lydia, now wife of Isaac Pope of Dartmouth; Elizabeth, now wife of Joseph Howland of North Harmouth; Mary, now wife of Joseph Fellows of North Yarmouth; Sarah now wife of Andrew Tuck of North Yarmouth.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: Jacob Mitchell made several deeds during his lifetime conveying property to his sons, including his interests in a saw mill and a grist mill. On 6 Nov 1744 he gave his son Seth a deed for “sundry tracts of land,” including “six acres Joining to the Home place of said Seth Mitchell.” On 19 Feb 1745 Jacob Mitchell, administrator to the estate of his father Jacob Mitchell, rendered an account which included payments to his mother; his brothers Seth and Noah Mitchell, “to Brother and Sister Baker,” to Joseph Howland “Agreeable to Brother Isaac Pope’s order...[and] “for Brother Elnathan Pope & Sister, from whom he has a Power of Attorney to act for,” “Brother and Sister Tuck,” and “Brother and Sister Howland.” The 31 Oct 1746 division of Jacob Mitchell’s estate (excluding property retained by Jacob Mitchell as eldest son) set off to the widow her thirds and divided the rest to daughter Rebecca, wife of Elnathan Pope of Dartmouth; son Noah Mitchell; Susannah, wife of Samuel Baker of North Yarmouth; Lydia, now wife of Isaac Pope of Yarmouth; Mary, now wife of Joseph Fellows of North Yarmouth; Sarah, now wife of Andrew Tuck of North Yarmouth. 28. Mary CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID42. Born 12 Oct 1682 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. At the age of 9, Mary was baptized in Plympton in 1692. She died in Plympton on 13 Mar 1723, at the age of 40.

On 19 Mar 1702 when Mary was 19, she married Robert WATERMAN, ID86, son of Dea. John WATERMAN, ID97 (1642-) & Ann STURTEVANT, ID7050, in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. “Married by Mr. Isaac Cushman, Minister of the Gospel at the Upper Society in Plimouth township.” Robert was born 9 Feb 1681/82 in Marshfield, Plymouth Co MA, and died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 16 Jan 1749/50; he was 67. Occupation: yeoman.

They had the following children:

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: On 21 Oct 1740 Robert Waterman of Halifax, yeoman, gave son Josiah Waterman of Kingston a farm in Kingston; wife Abigail released her dower.

The will of Robert Waterman of Halifax dated 1 Feb 1744, codicil 12 Jan 1749, proved 13 Feb 1749, names wife Abigail; sons Isaac, Josiah, Robert, Samuel and Thomas; and daus. Rebecca and Mary.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: At the court held at Plymouth in Sep 1746 Robert Waterman was among the owners of a dam built across the river running out of Monponset Pond in Halifax, with a furnace and two sawmills standing on or near the dam, who were sued for raising the water behind the dam and causing damage to land owned by Polycarpus Loring (ID32302) and William Holmes (ID32067).

The will of John Waterman of Halifax, dated 21 Mar 1748, mentions ownership of land on Hemlock Island in partnership with his brother Robert.

On 21 Jan 1739 Robert Waterman of Halifax, yeoman, gave his son Robert Waterman of Halifax, all the tract where Robert, Jr. lived between James Sturtevant and Jonathan Freeman, half of the meadow and swamp in Halifax on Hemlock Island, and all “west” land except that given to son Samuel. He made similar deeds of gift to sons Samuel and Josiah.

The will of Robert Waterman of Halifax, yeoman, dated 1 Feb 1744, names his wife Abigail (all the household stuff she brought with her; use of west end of house etc. during her widowhood only “I do not think it proper that She Should bring another Family into it;” and £80; sons Isaac (£22 plus what already given him), Josiah (5 shillings plus what given by deed), Robert (a case of drawers, round table, and framed chest with drawers), Samuel (with Robert he was to share equally in the Winnetuxet Meadow bought from Joseph Tinkham and John Smith, as well as the residue of the real estate), and Thomas (5 shillings plus what given by deed); and daughters Rebecca and Mary (£50 each). He also left £20 to Mary Ransom. A codicil was written 12 Jan 1749 in which he states he has made payments of £20 to Mary Ransom, now Mary Barrow, £21 to his daughter Mary, £45 to son Isaac, and £80 to his wife (plus some silver spoons and a golden necklace plus “all the yarn that is Now spun in the House and all the Cloth that is not made up Except So much as is Sufficent for a mans Coat,” and the use of the chest of drawers given to Robert). 29. Sarah CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID43. Born 17 Apr 1684 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Sarah died in Plympton on 2 Feb 1725; she was 40.

Sarah first married James BRADFORD, ID125.

On 8 Jul 1708 when Sarah was 24, she second married James BRYANT, ID124, son of John BRYANT, ID7003 & Sarah BONHAM, ID7004, in Plympton. James was born 26 Jul 1682 in Plymouth; he died in prob. Halifax, Plymouth Co MA aft Mar 1740/41; he was 57. Occupation: yeoman.

They had the following children:
i. Rebecca, 2C7R, ID7010. Born 17 May 1709 in Plympton, Plymouth Co  MA, she died there on 26 Apr 1711; she was 1.
ii. Barnabas, 2C7R, ID7011. Born 7 Mar 1710/11 in Plympton, Barnabas died there on 12 May 1715; he was 5.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: The will of Isaac Cushman Senr., of Plimton, made 25 Oct 1727, gives the children of daughter Sarah Briant deceased one quarter of the moveable estate. On 1 Nov 1732 James Bryant of Plympton was named guardian for his son Seth, under the age of 14, prob. in regard to his inheritance from Isaac Cushman. From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: On 25 Jan. 1731 James Bryant of Plympton sold all his farm land in Plympton to Nicholas Sever. On 3 Jan 1733 James Bryant, yeoman, sold a lot in Plympton to Nicholas Sever. Both deeds signed by James and Dorcas. On 3 Mar 1732/3 James Bryant of Plympton sold his homestead to Edward Sears.

No Plymouth Co. PR for James Bryant or deeds to his children.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: James Bryant was licensed as an innholder in Plympton from 1719 through 1730. James Bryant of Halifax served on the grand jury in Mar 1735/6, Mar 1739/40, and Mar 1740/1.

30. Ichabod CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID44. Born 30 Oct 1686 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Ichabod died in Middleborough, Plymouth Co MA on 26 Oct 1732; he was 45. “Aged 46 years wanting 4 days”.

Ichabod first married Esther BARNES, ID127, daughter of Jonathan BARNES, ID76 & Elizabeth HEDGE, ID77.

On 27 Nov 1712 when Ichabod was 26, he second married Patience HOLMES, ID126, daughter of John HOLMES, ID128 & Sarah THOMAS, ID130 (-27 Oct 1700), in Plympton, Plymouth Co MA. Patience was born 3 Nov 1690 in Plympton, abd died in Middleborough, Plymouth Co MA on 8 Sep 1755; she was 64.

From HWC’s Cushman Gen: Ichabod  lived in Plympton and Middleboro. His estate was settled by his widow Patience, in 1786.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: On 23 Dec 1718 Isaac Cushman, Senr., of Plimton, gave to his son Isaac all of his real estate on condition that he pay his brother Ichabod £100. On 3 Jan 1723 Isaac Cushman, Jr., of Plimton gave his brother Ichabod Cushman of Middleborough (with the condition that he maintain a sufficient fence) the meadow on the south side of Winetuxett River deeded to him by his father in 1718 and the right to meadow formerly belonging to John Howland. The will of Isaac Cushman, Senr., of Plimton, dated 25 Oct 1727, gave his son Ichabod, who had already received his full portion, an additional fifth part of his books plus 20 shillings. From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: On 27 Feb 1729/30 the estate of John Holmes of Middleborough, dec. was divided with a share going to Patience Cushman, wife of Ichabod Cushman.

On 2 Nov 1732 Mrs. Patience Cushman of Middleborough was appointed administratrix of the estate of her husband Ichabod Cushman late of Middleborough, dec. The inv. was dated 20 Dec. 1732. On 15 Mar 1732/3 an allowance was made to Patience Cushman for maintaining herself and family.

On 21 Mar 1736/7 the estate (of Ichabod Cushman) was divided to Patience Wood now wife of Elnathan Wood of Middleboro and children Ichabod Cushman, Mary Cushman, Isaac Cushman, Patience Cushman, Experience Cushman, Rebekah Cushman, Sarah Vaughan wife of Daniel of Middleboro and William Cushman eldest son. (On 27 Dec 1736 it had been decided that dau. Joanna Bozworth, wife of Ichabod Bozworth, had already had her share.)

31. Fear CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID45. Born on 10 Mar 1689 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Fear died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 13 Jul 1746; she was 57.

On 12 Feb 1707 when Fear was 17, she married William STURTEVANT, ID131, son of Dea, Samuel STURTEVANT, ID7016 & Mercy CORNISH, ID7017, in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. William was born abt 1683 in prob. Plymouth. He died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 28 Aug 1753; he was 70. Occupation: yeoman.

They had the following children:

Hannah Ripley and Fear Waterman; grandchildren, the children of late son Isaac Stertevant, via.: William, Isaac, Simeon, Samuel, Jesse, Nathaniel, Deborah and Martha; wife Joanna; son-in-law John Waterman Junr. executor.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: William Stertevant, yeoman, with Thomas Croade, David Curtiss, Robert Waterman (ID86), and Peter Tomson, as owners of a dam built across the river running out of Monponset Pond in Halifax, with a furnace and two sawmills standing on or near the dam, were charged at the Sep 1746 Plymouth court with having raised the water behind the dam to the detriment of land owned by Polycarpus Loring (ID 32302) and William Holmes (ID32067).

The will of William Stertevant of Hallifax, dated 7 Aug 1753 and proved 3 Sep 1753, names daus. Hannah Ripley and Fear Waterman; grandchildren, the children of late son Isaac Stertevant, viz: William, Isaac, Simeon, Samuel, Jesse, Nathl., Deborarh, and Martha; wife Joanna; son-in-law John Waterman, Junr., executor. Inventory was taken 8 Sep 1753. On 1 Feb 1755 William Sturtevant of Halifax, grandson of William Sturtevant late of Halifax, deceased, and Hezekiah Bearce of Halifax, guardian to Isaac, Simeon, Samuel, Jesse, and Nathaniel Sturtevant, grandsons of William, petitioned the court to tell land and part of a saw mill bequeathed to them.
