36. Lydia CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID95. Born on 13 Dec 1687 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Lydia died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 7 Jul 1771; she was 83.

On 29 Dec 1709 when Lydia was 22, she and John WATERMAN, ID96, son of Dea. John WATERMAN, ID97 (1642-) & Ann STURTEVANT, ID7050, were married in Plympton by Rev. Isaac Cushman. John was born 23 Sep 1685 in Marshfield, Plymouth Co MA. He died in Halifax, Plymouth Co MA on 8 Jun 1761; he was 75. Occupation: yeoman.

They had the following children:

From Plymouth MA VR, Book 1 - Marriages, p.93: James Cushman to Sarah Hatch Dec. 24th 1722. (Listed in “Marriages solemnized by Mr. Little of Plimouth in the year 1722.”)

From HWC’s Cushman Gen: James was b. in Plymouth and settled in that part of Fair Haven that was then Dartmouth. He built the house (still standing in 1855 when HWC published his Cushman Genealogy), about four miles north of New Bedrord, which was occupied by his son Elisha. He had 11 children.

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: The will of James Cushman of Dartmouth dated 14 Mar 1775, proved 6 Oct 1778, names son Elisha, dau. Temperance unm.; sons James, Seth, Ebenezer, Thomas; “my five daughters”; dau. Patience Cornish; dau. Lydia deceased, wife of Ephraim Jenney and her two daus.

38. John CUSHMAN, 1C8R, ID98. Born 13 Aug 1690 in Plympton, Plymouth Co MA. John died aft 1760; he was 69.

On 19 Jan 1715 when John was 24, he married Joanna PRATT, ID99, daughter of John PRATT, ID7058 (-aft 23 May 1730) & Margaret KIMBALL, ID7059, in Plympton. Joanna was born 26 Oct 1690 in Plymouth. She died aft 16 Nov 1747; she was 57.

From HWC’s Cushman Gen:  Married by Rev. Isaac Cushman.

4 Apr 1742 “he entered into covenant” with the church and was baptized. 2 Jan 1742-3, he was received into full communion.

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: Living in Plympton 9 May 1760.

On —— 1717/8 (date omitted), ack. 11 Mar 1717/8, John Pratt of Plympton, yeoman, sold to John Cushman of Plymouth, husbandman, 106 acres in Plympton. On 28 May 1722 John Cushman, laborer, mortgaged the land and sold off the land in pieces on 27 Feb 1721/2 and 18 Feb 1722/3. No wife signed any of the deeds, even though she was alive. No further deeds for John Cushman.

John Cushman became poor and landless and the town frequently had to help him beginning 12 Oct. 1741 and ending 9 May 1760. On 16 Nov 1747 the town paid his wife’s doctor bill and that is the last reference to her.

No Plymouth Co. PR for John or Joanna Cushman.

Carla’s Note: Henry Wyles Cushman made no mention of a son James, and Wakefield says only that he “may be an additional son.”

From “The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, from April 1636 to October 1776,” Vol. 10, Oct 1752, p.132: Upon the memorial of James Cushman, of Lebanon in the county of Windham, humbly representing that he hath expended considerable sums of money in defending himself and carrying on a law-suit against him brought on an indictment by the grand jury of the county of Worcester in the Province of the Massachusets (sic) Bay, grounded on his obedience in the laws of this government, in assisting a constable of the town of Woodstock in stilling an affray raised by one Benjamin Flagg, claiming to be High Sheriff of the county of Worcester aforesaid, and appears to have authority in the said town of Woodstock, &c., as appears by the memorial of the said Cushman on file, bro’t to this Assembly in May last and continued to this session : Resolved by this Assembly, that the sum of £111 10s. 6. in bills of credit of the Province of New Hampshire, and Colony of Rhode Island, old tenour, be granted to the said James Cushman out of the public treasury of this Colony, and the Treasurer of this Colony is hereby ordered to pay the said sums to the said James Cushman.

From “The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, from April 1636 to October 1776,” Vol. 10, May 1755, pp.386-7: Upon the memorial of Joseph Downer, of Norwich, administrator on the estate of the late James Cushman of Lebanon, (deceased,) shewing that the debts due from the estate of said deceased surmount the moveable estate the sum of sixty pounds lawful money; praying liberty to sell so much of the real estate of said deceased James Cushman as may make the said sum of sixty pounds lawful money with the necessary charges arising thereon : Resolved by this Assembly, that the memorialist have liberty, and the same is hereby granted to him, to sell so much of the real estate of the said deceased as may make the aforesaid sum of sixty pounds lawful money with the necessary charges arising thereon; taking the direction of the court of probates for the district of Windham.

From “The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, from April 1636 to October 1776,” Vol. 11, Oct 1758, pp.195-6: On the memorial of William Downer of Norwich, executor of the last will and testament of the late Joseph Downer of Norwich, (deceased,) and Giles Yeomans and Levina Yeomans his wife, both of Stonington, shewing in this Assembly that the said Joseph Downer in his life time was administrator on the estate of James Cushman of Lebanon, (deceased,) which said Cushman was the late husband of the said Levina, and that the said Giles is the guardian of all the children of the said Cushman, and that in the administration on the said Cushman’s estate it appeared that the debts and charges and allowances made by the court of probate in the district of Windham surmounted the personal estate of said deceased Cushman the sum of sixty pounds lawful money, and that thereupon the said Joseph Downer, administrator as aforesaid, obtained liberty from this Assembly, in May 1755, to make sale of so much of said deceased Cushman’s land as should enable him to pay the said sixty pounds with the incident charges arising thereon, taking the direction of said probate court therein, which liberty granted with directions given thereon he pursued and made sale of the lands which did belong to said Cushman sufficient to pay the said sum and costs thereon, and that the said Joseph Downer, the administrator as aforesaid, died before he had executed a deed or deeds of the lands so sold by him, altho’ the said deceased administrator raised the money on said sale of said lands and the same paid out in discharge of the debts of said deceased Cushman; praying that the sales aforesaid may be confirmed by deed, and that the said Giles Yeomans and Levina his wife may be authorized and impowered to make a deed or deeds of conveyance to the person or persons to whom the same was sold by the said deceased Joseph Downer, in conformity to and accomplishment of the sale or sales by him, said Downer, made as aforesaid : Granted, that the said Giles Yeomans and Levina his wife have liberty, and full liberty and authority is hereby given to them, to make and execute a deed or deeds of conveyance to the person or persons to whom the lands which did belong to said deceased Cushman were sold by the said deceased Joseph Downer as administrator on said Cushman’s estate, in conformity unto and accomplishment of the sales by him, said administrator, made as aforesaid.

From Frederic W. Bailey’s Early Connecticut Marriages, p. 43: The wife of son James  is listed as Levina DOWNEY.

Carla’s Note: It appears that Joseph Downer of Norwich, administrator of James Cushman’s estate, is related to Levina (Downer) Cushman, but how? I show a Joseph Downer (ID24861) married to Asenath Cushman (ID938), a daughter of Allerton and Alaehtea (Soule) Cushman.

On 22 Aug 1721 when Moses was 28, he married Mary JACKSON, ID101, daughter of Eleazer JACKSON,ID7063 & Hannah RANSOM, ID7064, in Plympton. Mary was born 15 Apr 1701 in Plymouth, and was living on 2 Jan 1764, date of deed..

From HWC’s Cushman Gen: Moses was received into full communion in the church at Halifax 9 Oct 1737; he was chosen Deacon 2 May 1757, and was Grand Juryman in 1751 and 1752. His wife was a member of the church from its first organization, and his dau. Sarah was received into full communion 3 Oct 1742. 

From Isaac Allerton of the MF...4 Gens: On 2 Jan 1764 Moses Cushman of Halifax deeded his homestead to son Abner Cushman of Halifax; wife Mary surrendered her dower.

On 24 Feb 1702/03 when Elizabeth was 19, she married Thomas DOTY Jr., 1C9R, ID6662, son of Thomas DOTY, ID29893 (prob 1641 or 1642-4 or 5 Dec 1678) & Mary CHURCHILL, ID29892 (1 Aug 1654-aft 18 Oct 1725), in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Thomas was born 22 Jul 1679 in Plymouth, and died in prob. Truro, Plymouth Co MA bet 9 May 1721 and 8 Feb 1722 (the dates of writing & proving his will); he was 42.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: The 21 Jun 1712 settlement of the estate of William Harlow of Plymouth names Thomas Doten son of eldest daughter Elizabeth Doten, deceased, giving him 34 acres of his “grandfather’s” 60-acre lot above the Pond path, 15 acres below the pond path, and his “grandfather’s” share in the last division of the first lot. The 24 Dec 1720 division of the estate of Lydia Harlow of Plymouth names Thomas Doty, Jr., son of Elizabeth late wife of Thomas Doty Jr., dec.

From Edward Doty of the MF...4 Gens: The 21 Jun 1712 settlement of the estate of William Harlow of Plymouth names widow Lidia Harlow and dau. Elizabeth Doten, dec., leaving one son Thomas Doten. The 24 Dec 1720 division of the estate of Lydia Harlow of Plymouth names Thomas Doty Jr., son of Elizabeth late wife of Thomas Doty Jr., dec.

From VRs from Plymouth Town Clerk’s Office, Bk. 1 - Page 56: The child of Thomas Dotey & Elizabeth his wife: Thomas born on the 26 day of January 1704.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: On 8 Jul 1714, Henry Churchill of Plympton conveyed all his lands in Plympton, Plymouth, and Sepican alias Rochester (after his death and the death of his wife Mary, Thomas’s mother) to “my dutiful son-in-law [i.e., stepson] Thomas Doty of Cape Cod.”

The will of Thomas Doty of Cape Cod in Truro, dated 9 May 1721 and probated 8 Feb 1721/2, names wife Mercy; Joseph Abbitt, the child that lives with me (under age 21); son Thomas (to maintain his grandmother Mary Churchill during her life), and executors Joseph Hatch and Christopher Stout (the latter renounced his power of executorship). Inventory was taken 16 Feb 1721/2 and included dwelling houses, a cooper’s shop and warehouse, boat, schooner and rigging, half a whale boat, and a pew in the meeting house. Another inventory taken 3 Mar 1721/2 included an old dwelling and land between Return Waite and James Rickard’s land in Plymouth, land in Plymouth below Cole’s Hill, 30 feet of waterfront with the cooper’s shop, house and land at Wellingsley (a section of Plymouth), six acres of land between Samuel Harlow and John Faunce, five tracts between Thomas Harlow and Jonathan Morey, 30 acres above Josiah Finney and near Warren’s Wells, a share of cedar swamp in the 9th lot, and a pew in the gallery in the meeting house in the South Precinct of Plymouth. In Dec 1724 Joseph Hatch, seafaringman or fisherman of Cape Cod, as executor of the estate of Thomas Doty of Cape Cod, innholder and cooper, defended against two civil suits filed in the Court of Common Pleas at Plymouth. From Edward Doty of the MF...4 Gens: On 8 Jul 1714 Thomas Doty’s stepfather, Henry Churchill of Plympton, conveyed his lands to “my dutiful son-in-law [stepson] Thomas Doty of Cape Cod.”

The will of Thomas Doty of Cape Cod in Truro dated 9 May 1721, probated 8 Feb 1722, names his wife Mercy; Joseph Abbit, “the child that lives with me”; son Thomas, he to maintain his grandmother Mary Churchill during her life.

On 1 Dec 1707 when Thomas was 21, he married Jedidah CHURCHILL, ID7554, daughter of Eleazer CHURCHILL, ID7555 (-5 Mar 1716) & Mary BRYANT, ID7556 (-11 Dec 1715), in Plymouth, Plymouth Co MA. Jedidah was born 29 Jan 1687 in Plymouth; She died aft 3 Dec 1746; she was 59.

The 24 Dec 1720 division of the estate of Lydia Harlow widow of Plymouth names Thomas, William, Robert and Isaac Harlow; Thomas Doty Jr., son of Elizabeth late wife of Thomas Doty, dec.; Lydia wife of Barnabas Churchill and Rebecca Harlow.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: Thomas received the “old homestead” (including acreage originally granted by the town) from the settlement of the estate of his father made 12 Jun 1712, in which he is named as eldest son. He also received meadow at Little Meadow and was required to make cash payments to his siblings. On 11 Jul 1720 Thomas Harlow of Plymouth, husbandman, was appointed administrator of the estate of his mother, Lydia Harlow, which was divided into cash payments 24 Dec 1720.

On 4 Mar 1713, ack. 19 Oct 1713, Thomas Harlow of Plymouth sold for £2.10s. from Benjamin Warren of Plymouth, his right in a piece of meadow and swamp in Plymouth at Little Meadow. Thomas Harlow of Plymouth, seaman, sold on 15 Jan 1723/4 for £30 from Elisha Holmes of Plymouth, 30 acres of land formerly granted to “my Honored Father William Harlow deceased by the Town of Plymouth” at Monomet Ponds.

From Harlow Family...5 Gens: William Harlow is named in the settlement of his father’s estate on 7 Mar 1711/12, receiving the 100-acre lot on “Fall brook in Middlebury,” Massachusetts, and in the division of his mother’s estate on 11 Jul 1720.

William Harlow and wife were dismissed to the 2nd church at Bridgewater on 24 Sep 1749. William is said to have removed to B ridgewater as early as 1742, but he may have done business there much earlier, as William Harlow of Bridgewater was granted a retail license to sell liquor in Sep 1731.

William Harlow of Bridgewater died intestate and administration was granted to his son William Harlow on 5 Mar 1749/50.

On 3 Jun 1769 Daniel Snell and Joannah, John Snow and Hanna, Nathan Perkins and Sarah, Jonathan Beal and Abigail, Daniel Washburn and Experience, all of Bridgewater; Jacob Peterson and Mary of Duxbury; Benjamin Pratt and Lydia of Middleboro; John Harlow of Middleboro, cordwainer; and Isaac Harlow of New Lebanon in New York, heirs of the estate of William Harlow late of Bridgewater, deceased, quitclaimed for £6.10s. paid by William Harlow of Middleboro, cordwainer and administrator of the estate of said William Harlow deceased, their title in 11-1/4 acres of land in Middleboro.
